    Salve ragazzi,

I use Tex Live with the Texworks GUI on both my Linux and Windows systems. I should do a post on the manifold benefits of switching from a word processor to a proper typesetting language like LaTex. However, here I’ll make note another distinction; word processors are intended to be used by everyone, whereas LaTex editors assume you are capable of basic administrative tasks.

Therefore, word processors must ship with everything you may need, or at least a script which will ask you if you need it and download it accordingly. This tends to bloat word processors into being larger programs than they need to be. LaTex editors, on the other hand, tend to ship with only the necessary components. If you would like to add functionality, you simply google what you want to do and you’ll easily find the answer.

This intro gives you some background into on why Texworks does not ship with spell-checking dictionaries. If you want your documents to be spell checked (standard little red lines below incorrectly spelled words) then follow the directions below:

First you need to get the dictionaries. Texworks can use the same dictionaries as Openoffice (a great open-source office suite – word processor; spreadsheet; presentation software; and database). You can get the US English spell checking dictionaries here:

      http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/en/project/en_US-dict

If you don’t want US English you can choose your language from here:

      http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/dictionary

The downloaded file is an .oxt, so just change the extension to .zip and unzip it. Once unzipped you want only the .dic and .aff files.

Now, we want to move these files into a ‘dictionaries’ folder within TexWorks. However, some installations may already have the ‘dictionaries’ folder and some may not. So, go to

      C:\Documents and Settings\user\

and look in both the TexWorks and .texlive2011 folders for a dictionaries subfolder. If it is not there just create it.

Specifically, I created a ‘dictionaries’ folder in:

      C:\Documents and Settings\USER\.texlive2011\texmf-config\texworks

Note, of course, ‘USER’ is you.

Then copy the .dic and .aff files to the newly created folder, and open TexWorks. Go to the drop-down box under ‘Edit’ > ‘Preferences’ > ‘Spell-check language’ and you should see your language there – choose it and now you’ll see the red line under incorrectly spelled words in your TexWorks editor (not the pdf output of course).

      Scusa, ma vorrei una precisazione…
Il correttore ortografico è attivo su tutto il documento o solo sulle parti segnalate come otherlanguage english?
Perché sto cercando come fare per avere una correzione multilingua a seconda della lingua dei paragrafi.
      Grazie
