        È il solito problema che quando è attiva l’opzione french di babel, i caratteri : ? e ! sono attivi.
        `\shorthandoff{:}\setarab`
        Prova anche caricando arabtex dopo babel

          Purtroppo il trucco di cambiare l’ordine di caricamento dei pacchetti non funziona, questa volta. Ho anche provato ad aggiungere il tuo incantesimo, ma non funziona.

          No, l’errore non è lo stesso di prima, perché ti dice che il carattere illegale è !; poi te ne dà uno con ?. Aggiungi anche \shorthandoff{!} e \shorthandoff{!}. Forse anche con il punto e virgola, se l’input arabo la usa.

            Perfetto! Con
            `\shorthandoff{:}
            \shorthandoff{?}
            \shorthandoff{;}
            \shorthandoff{!}`
            non si hanno errori di compilazione e si può scrivere in arabo.

            Giusto per completezza, segnalo che per ripristinare il comportamento attivo dei segni di punteggiatura (per esempio se si scrive -è il mio caso- un testo in francese dopo uno arabo), basta scrivere
            `\selectlanguage{french}

            \shorthandon{:}
            \shorthandon{?}
            \shorthandon{;}
            \shorthandon{!}`
            e si è pronti per il francese.

            Alè.

            Grazie mille,

            Sono completamente nuovo al bilingue e devo scrivere un libro italiano-arabo con testi ampiamente mescolati.
            Sto valutando se mi convenga Open Office o Latex (magari con Lyx).
            Ho fatto qualche prova con gli esempi che date, ma non riesco a fargli accettare direttamente caratteri arabi come mi sarebbe comodo.
            Se provo a compilare questo:
            `\documentclass{article}
