Ebbene, se io aggiungo tra il comando \chapter e il successivo \section un’altro \section tipo
\section{varietà algebriche}
ottengo il seguente errore:

Ottengo quattro warning, ma niente errori.

No scusate, grandissima correzione. Ottengo errori ogni qualvolta metto una lettera accentata sul titolo di una sezione. Perché mai???

Sicuro di aver salvato il file con codifica utf8? Su che piattaforma lavori? Che editor usi?
Controlla ed eventualmete sostituisci
`\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}
` con
`\usepackage[latin1]{inputenc}
`
Però attento al resto del documento. Se il file è stato originariamente scritto in utf8 e lo converti in latin1 alcune lettere accentate potrebbero ‘saltare’.

Tutto in utf8. Uso emacs. Sto riuscendo ad aggirare l’errore scrivendo \`a al posto di à e cose del genere.

Questa è una soluzione che aggira il problema. Infatti, eliminando queste due righe dal tuo codice tutto fila liscio:

\usepackage{classicthesis} `
Quindi potrebbe essere un problema che riguarda classicthesis, che però conosco solo superficialmente :(. Sicuramente Lorenzo, che ha scritto una guida su questo stile, ti potrà svelare l’arcano.

Tutto in utf8. Uso emacs. Sto riuscendo ad aggirare l’errore scrivendo \`a al posto di à e cose del genere.

Il comando \MakeUppercase non è compatibile con utf8 per motivi difficili da correggere. Negli argomenti mobili usa i comandi \` e simili. C’è poco da fare, attualmente; viceversa con latin1 va tutto bene. Siccome con emacs è facilissimo passare da una codifica all’altra, te lo consiglio.
