Il manuale di stile Style Manual della Artech House si riferisce alle equazioni, ma direi che vada bene per qualunque cosa in display che debba essere letto, non che debba essere solo “guardato” come una figura (che per altro andrebbe in display, ma come oggetto mobile, e non sarebbe lecito dire: come si vede in questa figura):
Displayed equations, although se apart from text, is a continuation of the sentence that immediately precedes it, where the alphanumeric symbols are [to be conisdered as ] symbols or nouns and the operational signs are verbs. Therfore the transitional phrase leading to the equation requires punctuation (but never a period) if the last item of the phrase is a noun, adjective, adverb, or some form of cross-reference (figure, table, equation, chapter, section or a reference number). If the transitional phrase introduces the equation with a verb, article, conjunction, or preposition, do not punctuate.
Anche se è in inglese il significato è trasparente; secondo me è anche di molto buon senso.
