A me funziona. Posso solo fare la supposizione che il tuo documento non sia propriamente codificato UTF-8.

Non ti dà errore alle righe corrispondenti ai comandi \newunicodechar? Perché l’altra supposizione è che tu non abbia messo quelle righe. Infatti in tal caso ottengo
