In the structure of 3, confirmed by a diffractometric study, the two Pt(3) fragments lie, perfectly eclipsed, on the same side of the biferrocenyl moiety; this folded structure is also preferred in solution, as suggested by NMR Diffusion Ordered Spectroscopy (DOSY) and 1D Rotating-frame Overhauser Enhancement (ROE) measurements. Compound 3 exhibits a rich redox behavior, with a crowded sequence of six one-electron oxidation processes, the electrode potentials of which have been evaluated by digital simulations. On the basis of a spectroelectrochemical study, the first two oxidations are assigned to the iron centers of the diferrocenyl unit and the subsequent four electrons are removed from the Pt(3) units.},

abstract = {Luminescent metal complexes are key materials for several applications such as lighting, analytical probes, and lasers. In many cases compounds based on precious (i.e. platinum group) and rare earth metals are utilized, which are often rather expensive and environmentally problematic. In recent years, interest is growing in luminescent complexes based on less traditional but more abundant and cheaper metal elements. In this scenario compounds of metals with a d10 electronic configuration are playing a prominent role, also thanks to the versatility of their luminescent levels which can be of ligand centred, charge transfer or, in the case of polynuclear compounds, even metal-centred nature. Here we focus on some selected examples of Cu(I), Ag(I), Au(I), Zn(II) and Cd(II) luminescent complexes to suggest some possible routes towards promising and unprecedented emitting materials.},

The lowest energy MLCT transitions are tuned from 463 to 494 nm by tuning the energy of the HOMO levels. These complexes show emission maxima in the blue, green, and yellow region of the visible spectrum and exhibit unprecedented phosphorescence quantum yields, 97 +/- 3\% with an excited-state lifetimes of 1-3 micros in dichloromethane solution at 298 K. The near-unity quantum yields of these complexes are related to an increased energy gap between the triplet emitting state and the deactivating e(g) level that have been achieved by meticulous selection of ligands having strong ligand field strength. Organic light-emitting devices were fabricated using the complex 4 doped into a purified 4,4′-bis(carbazol-9-yl)biphenyl host exhibiting a maximum of the external quantum efficiencies of 13.2\% and a power efficiency of 37 lm/W for the 9 mol \% doped system.},

abstract = {Metal alkynyl complexes hold a fascination for synthetic chemists, structural chemists, and materials scientists alike. Harnessing the unique overlap of metal and carbon orbitals is a challenge that can be overcome in many ways and hence, there are many synthetic routes toward M-C=C-bond-forming reactions that utilize a wide variety of transition-metal and alkynyl reagents. Some methods can be widely applied, while others are specific to a particular metal or compound. The linear geometry of the alkynyl unit and its pi-unsaturated character have led to metal alkynyls becoming attractive building blocks for molecular wires and polymeric organometallic materials, which can possess interesting properties, such as optical nonlinearity, luminescence, liquid crystallinity, and electrical conductivity. A unique, multifaceted approach, often combining talents from all three of the above chemical disciplines, has served as a driving force behind the intense research into the development of metal alkynyl sigma complexes, the progress of which, particularly in the last ten years, is summarized in this review.},
