successivamente ho installato TeXworks dal software center;
mi ritrovo con problemi di compilazione del tipo:

Grazie mille e perdonate la domanda da newbie (sia di Ubuntu che di LaTeX)

Ciao,
la risposta è semplive visto che si trova scritta nella prima riga del log di compilazione.
Installanfo TeX works da software center hai anche installato TeX Live di nuovo come dipendenza obbligatoria.
Rimuovi TeX works e questa TeX live e installa TeX works dal suo sito come pacchetto indipendente.
Ci sono altre soluzioni, magari piú semplici.
